At Grayline Coaches, we offer Driver CPC training delivered by a fully qualified, DVSA-registered trainer in our purpose-built training facility.
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a qualification required for professional bus, coach, and lorry drivers throughout the UK and Europe. It was introduced to improve road safety and maintain high standards of professional driving.
Professional drivers operating:
Lorries over 3.5 tonnes (LGV)
Passenger Carrying Vehicles (PCV) with 9 or more seats
must usually hold a valid Driver CPC in addition to their vocational driving licence, unless exempt under specific regulations.
New drivers must obtain their Driver CPC by successfully completing the Initial Driver CPC qualification, which includes both theory and practical assessments.
Once qualified, drivers receive a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) or have Code 95 added to their driving licence as proof of qualification.
To maintain their Driver CPC, professional drivers must complete:
35 hours of approved periodic training every 5 years.
Failure to complete the required training before the qualification expires will result in the Driver CPC lapsing, preventing the driver from legally driving professionally until compliance is restored.
Drivers who obtained their vocational licences before the introduction of Driver CPC are deemed to hold "acquired rights" and do not need to complete the Initial Driver CPC qualification.
This applies to:
Drivers holding categories D, D1, D+E, or D1+E obtained before 10 September 2008.
Drivers holding categories C, C1, C+E, or C1+E obtained before 10 September 2009.
Although exempt from the initial qualification, these drivers must still complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to maintain their Driver CPC.
Drivers with acquired rights receive their Driver Qualification Card once they have completed their first 35 hours of approved periodic training.
A single DQC covers both PCV and LGV qualifications, meaning drivers licensed for both vehicle types only need to complete one set of 35 hours of training every five years.
Each new five-year training cycle begins from the expiry date of the current Driver CPC qualification, not from the date the driver completes their 35 hours of training.
Our professional Driver CPC courses are designed to help drivers remain compliant, improve their skills, and maintain the highest standards of road safety and customer service.
